About Fawkes Café & Bakery
Our Story
Fawkes Café & Bakery is the latest chapter in a long love story with Edmonton’s café scene. Jorel and Mikayla Pepin previously owned and operated Block 1912 on Whyte Avenue before moving on to explore other ventures. After five years away, they missed the joy of running a café: the people, the energy, and the everyday rhythm of service.
By coincidence, they came across an empty space downtown that felt right. Fawkes began as a pop-up, offering coffee and vegan cake doughnuts while the permanent space was being built. Over 843 days, they sold more than 75,000 doughnuts. The community was ready.
With the help of family, friends, and an incredible man named Earl, the new space came to life. From drop ceilings to poured concrete to a 75-foot bar top, Earl built much of what you see today. The name Fawkes speaks to renewal and rising again. It’s a nod to the owners’ return to the café world and their belief in doing things with purpose.
Made With Meaning
Nearly everything inside Fawkes has a story. The bar was built from reclaimed 1910 wood. The mirrors once hung in a yoga studio. The decorative menus above the washrooms are more than 30 years old.
By the door, you’ll find a 1911 antique scale that once weighed pelts when this building was Western Canada’s largest saddle manufacturer. Jorel and Mikayla refinished it themselves, preserving a small piece of local history.
Even the drawers hold meaning. Inside are napkin notes, part of a 36-year-old café tradition they’ve proudly continued.
A Café That Stays Open Late
Downtown Edmonton has no shortage of cafés, but few that are open late. Fawkes was built to fill that gap. Whether you need a quiet morning space or somewhere warm and welcoming after dark, we’re here.
Open every day from 8 AM to 10 PM, Fawkes offers more than just coffee and pastries. It’s a dependable spot to start your day, catch up with friends, or wind down after work. That kind of consistency is rare, but for Jorel and Mikayla, it just made sense.
Made Fresh, Made Fair
At Fawkes, we take pride in making nearly everything from scratch. From pastries to sandwiches to sauces, it’s all prepared in-house with attention and care. Our focaccia, a customer favourite, is baked fresh twice a day to keep every bite warm, soft, and full of flavour. You can taste the difference that fresh, thoughtful preparation makes.
We also believe good food should be inclusive. That’s why we never charge extra for gluten-friendly swaps or plant-based alternatives. Whether you’re here for a snack or a full meal, we want everyone to feel welcome at the table.
